This pinch hit has been taken, thank you!

Assignments are out!
Please check your AO3 assignments page or the email you have associated with Ao3 and see who you were assigned to! There were two initial pinch hits, both of which will be posted in a few minutes. If you’d like to sign up for a newsletter for pinch hits, it’s here.
We have done our best to try to ensure that everyone has a good match, but if there is an issue with yours, please contact either mod privately or go through our inbox. We will handle things discretely and privately.
Since assignments have gone out, there are a couple things we’d like all authors and artists out there to keep in mind:
If you have any questions or comments, be sure to let us know!
SIGN-UPS ARE OPEN!
Sign ups for the Spectre Requisitions exchange will be possible from January 14th to January 25th. You must fill out at least five unique requests and unique three offers (requests and offers do not necessarily have to be the same!). Anytime someone offers something, we will update the “Offers Present?” tab on the spreadsheet with a simple yes when it is offered.
You may also choose ‘Any Pairings’ and ask or volunteer to write any of the pairings of the nominations list.
NOW THAT SAID: SIGN UP! SIGN UP! SIGN-UP! CLICK HERE TO SIGN-UP!
You can go back and edit your Sign Up Form up until 25 Jan 2019 06:00PM EST.
One Important Addition this year: Please add your DNW (Do Not Wants) to your sign-ups. We cannot enforce DNWs that are only in letters!
A BIG WARNING ABOUT USING ‘ANY PAIRINGS’: Any pairing means exactly that, that you are willing to get or create fanworks for any pairing. We cannot control what characters or prompts are in an “Any Pairings” request. Thus, it should not be used for a request like “Any Garrus Vakarian fic”. “Any pairing” requests should only be requested for when you really want to see a certain trope or kink (and don’t care which characters are used) and should only be offered if you want the sheer challenge of a pure mystery! The only thing we will allow you to limit it by is the category of relationship, eg Gen, F/F, M/M or F/M. Anything else put into the box will be ignored so chose this option CAREFULLY.
If you would like to participate but do not have an AO3 account, please send us a message on tumblr and we will get you an invitation.
Time to get to nominating this year’s delicious rare pairs!
When nominating, please fill in “Mass Effect -- All Media Types” in the fandom box. As we unfortunately discovered with the Black Emporium exchange, Ao3 is happiest when the “all media types” fandom is used.
As a reminder, both gen (&) and relationship (/) tags are allowed for this exchange. Please don’t hesitate to hit up either of the mods (acequeenking and
keita52 ) for questions!
And if you haven’t already joined the Discord server, it’s a great place to hang out and talk rare pairs.
Mod K and I have finally gotten together and been able to go over all your good comments and criticism from our feedback survey.
Here's what we'll be taking away from it, in addition to the changes we mentioned earlier:
NOT CHANGING:
- The minimum word count will remain at 1K, and the writing period will remain six weeks. Those looking to get longer fic may want to check out the Mass Effect Big Bang or Fandom5K.
- We won't police tag usage among authors. Authors can and should feel comfortable using Choose Not to Warn. Authors can and should either use Choose Not to Warn OR tags that accurately reflect the content of their fic.
GENERAL HOUSEKEEPING:
- we will have the countdown clocks better run next year. Mea culpa.
BINGOS:
- We are definitively keeping comment bingo, and may well expand it next year to have more options for commenting.
- For both writing and commenting bingo Cards, we will publish a full list of potential draws and will allow some things to be opted out of next year. We will publish the full list of potential prompts and you will be able to opt out of several so people won't worry about being "trapped" into writing something they're uncomfortable with.
Both of these will also be coming to Black Emporium, our sister exchange, this summer.
COMMUNITY/DISCORD:
- We have now promoted
- We will be doing weekend writing/
- We may be cleaning out or moving things around on the Discord channel, depending on how we decide to implement certain changes for next round. If there's something on there you want to save, save it now.
TUMBLR/DREAMWIDTH:
- If you ask a question in Discord that you feel is not adequately explained on our Tumblr/DW, please tell us so we can put it on Tumblr.
- We will continue to try to keep the DW up-to-date with news, but we got a lot of comments that people do not use the DW. We don't plan on abandoningApologies these are so late. Mod A hasn’t had a lot of free time! But banners I promised, and even if it takes me time, I try to uphold my promises. Next year will be faster. Here are the categories for those who might have forgotten.
1) Please take this survey and give us feedback about this year! Feedback helps make us improve each year so knowing what you like, what you didn’t - all of that is like catnip to us. The survey is short, completely anonymous, and all questions beyond the first are optional - but the more information we get, the better we can make SpecRecs for next year.
2) While we may have more rules changes depending on feedback, we do have two rule changes we are making up front for next year:
Our next commenting bingo has reported
They've not been satisfied to just write fic, however; they've also been commenting and hit a bingo on their comment bingo card, clenching their victory by reading about an alternate universe! Let's hope they don't fall in since many would agree Joufancey has done a great job this year! Why Bain was so excited to find out about Joufancey that he had to come out to thank them in person - and even dressed up for the occasion! He even brought them flowers!
Keen-eyed readers are encouraged to check outOur first commenting bingo has reported in, and it’s Bioticfox! Bioticfox has been with us since last year, when they wrote one of the definitive M!Shepard/Kaiden Alenko/James Vega fics. And though they remain a great writer, this year they have out-done themselves year in their commenting output. For you see, Bioticfox didn’t just thank their own author; they instead wrote so many comments they did a complete black-out on their card! Among other things that they’ve commented on: fic that features all kinds of races, from angarians to quarians and everywhere in between; reviewing a fic set on the lawless land of Omega or Kadara, reviewing a fic over 8K, and reviewing over 20 works in the collection.
And most impressively, Bioticfox has shown no sign of stopping and has in fact gone for a second comment card! We salute you, brave bioticfox! Even James, as shown above, has felt the need to memorialize you for your bravery. Ignore the tears; he’s still a bit verklempt about it.
Keen-eyed readers are encouraged to check out bioticfox’s other fan output, including their tumblr @bioticfox and Ao3. Here is her excellent work from previous rounds:
The last first kiss(es) (Teen, Kaidan Alenko/Male Shepard/James Vega): Kaidan shares his regrets, John takes the chance, and James knows how to be bold.
Our first writing bingo has reported
While their current work in Spec Recs 2018 collection is still anon, this year BethAdastra created numerous works that included the following prompts: First Time, Bondage, Interspecies, Crop and Zoom, Negative Space, Canon Ship, Non-Canon Ship, Armor, M/M, Creative Biotics, Het, D/S, and, no doubt the best phrase to describe BethAdastra's work, "Worth It."
Keen-eyed readers are encouraged to check out their tumblr @bethadastra and Ao3 (BethAdastra) and their works from previous rounds:
No Crying Over Spilled Whiskey (Bain Massani/Reyes Vidal, Mature): Fanart
An Extra (Macen Barro/Avitus Rix, General Audiences): Fanart

Also, Comment Bingo Cards are available! These are bingo cards that have different categories to challenge your reading material, such as to read works from different races, different lengths, types, etc. If you’re interested in one please send us a message or reply to this post and we will make sure to send you one.
Once you complete a bingo (or, for the truly brave, a full house/blackout), let us know and we’ll make you a post bragging about your success in the challenge, along with bad photoshop artwork done by Mod A!

Trophies are returning, so get your speeches ready! As returning vets may know, trophies are unlocked by the community as the whole. For those who want an individual challenge, we have a new game to introduce!
Bingo cards come in two sizes, 5x5 and 3x3, for prompts to be used as inspiration in creating fic or images. Fills may be of any genre, style or rating, and you can request a card in several flavors: SFW, NSFW, Trilogy, Andromeda, Art, and Commenting cards. (Note: Commenting Cards won’t be available until the archive is full since we do not know at this point what kinds of works will be in the archive, but you can certainly request one ahead of time!)
These are non-binding and self-regulated; you can get a “Bingo” by making a line, four corners, etc; you can put multiple ideas in one fic or artwork as you please. If you finish, please let us know so we can post a congratulations post for you. :D
If you want to play, all you need to do is send a request for a bingo card to our tumblr inbox or reply to this dreamwidth post (you do not need a Dreamwidth account to post!).
All we need to know is:
- What size you want (5x5, 3x3)
- Which “flavors” you would like potential prompts from
We will then make you a bingo card. Here is an example of one made with the Andromeda set.
Let us know and get to requesting today!
Thanks to Andromeda taking off more this year, we've opted to increase the number of potential matches from 10 to 20. However, Ao3 encodes a hard limit of 10 different requests to the sign-up at maximum. To get around that, we have instead increased the amount of relationships you can place in each box. Ao3 will calculate them independently and you will have a chance to put in one or two pairings from the tagset in the relationship box.The minimum amount of requests remains 5 and the maximum is now 20.
This is what it looks like with one relationship filled in:
Note that the box is still active and allows you to fill more in.
And here’s what it looks like with two tags filled in:
Now, the box is gone, and you’re maxed out for this request set.
Note that when you’re doing multiple pairings, you’ll have to put your prompts/likes/DNWs for the two pairings in the same box.
Don’t hesitate to reach out if you’ve got more questions!
Time to get to nominating this year’s delicious rare pairs!
When nominating, please fill in “Mass Effect -- All Media Types” in the fandom box. As we unfortunately discovered this past year with the Black Emporium exchange, Ao3 is happiest when the “all media types” fandom is used.
As a reminder, both gen (&) and relationship (/) tags are allowed for this exchange. Please don’t hesitate to hit up either of the mods:
